Sydney treatment technology helps Beijing reuse wastewater

SIEMENS says its made-in-Sydney membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology has been deployed in Beijing to allow the Chinese city to meet its growing water demand.

The MBR technology was designed and manufactured at the company’s global research and development and manufacturing facility in Windsor. The system has been installed at the Beixiaohe Waste Water Treatment, and will supply the Olympic Park with recreational water.

The system contains both biological and membrane treatment. It treats waste water so it can be reused in fountains and lakes. It was retrofitted to the waste water plant, allowing the facility to produce an additional 60,000 cubic metres of recycled water per day, up 150%.
Besides its use in civil water processing, the manufacturer says the technology can be used to treat industrial wastewater for potential reuse within lower-level processes. The membrane bioreactor system is said to feature less treatment stages and higher removal efficiency, while being more compact than conventional treatment technology.
