As scheduled, the BeiXiaoHe wastewater treatment plant has become operational prior to the start of the Olympic Games in Peking. BeiXiaoHe constitutes one of the world’s largest membrane bioreactor plants and is fitted with state-of-the-art technology for the reuse of cleaned wastewater.|

Two years ago, in a consortium with Siemens, WABAG was awarded a contract by the Beijing Drainage Group for the realisation of a wastewater recovery plant. The consortium received the order for this ambitious project on the basis of a modern plant design from WABAG.

Modernisation and enlargement of the municipal wastewater treatment plant

The contract comprised the modernisation and enlargement of an existing municipal wastewater treatment plant and an increase in its capacity from 40,000 m3/d to 100,000 m3/d. The original plant with mechanical/biological cleaning was fitted with new aeration blowers and a UV-light disinfection system.

The new plant guarantees environment-friendly water reuse

Plant enlargement involved the addition of a completely new wastewater line, designed for water reclamation and with output of 60,000 m3 / d. The progressive process concept, using membrane bioreactor technology guarantees that the Olympic Park in Beijing can be irrigated with resource-protective recycling water. The MBR plant contains hollow fibre membranes (Memcor Memjet) with a total membrane area of 180.000 m2.

In addition, further filtration via a reverse osmosis system provides a significant decrease in residual loads, whereby a partial flow of 3,000 m3/d is available for sensitive use in public areas such as the filling of fountains and ponds in the Park.

Following successful start-up Ferdinand Klegraf, who designed the plant and accompanied realisation up to the handover, can report that, “The extremely strict demands with regard to the treated wastewater for reuse, involving 30 mg/l chemical oxygen requirement, 0.3 mg/l Phosphorus, 10 mg/l Nitrogen and 2 coliform bacteria in 100 ml of water, can be safely maintained and even significantly undercut.”

WABAG has been active in China for 20 years and has completed more than 70 water and wastewater plants for municipal authorities and industrial companies. As a result of prestigious projects such as the BeiXiaoHe plant and the second current contract in Beijing, the Xiaohongmen sludge treatment plant, WABAG is looking to continue to impress as an innovative systems supplier in China, the world’s second largest water treatment market.
